David Goodall is a 104 year old, Australian botanist. He has advocated for the legalization of voluntary euthanasia for over 20 years. On the 30 April 2018, Goodall announced he planned to travel to Switzerland in May of that year to undergo euthanasia. He publicly expressed regret for surviving to such an advanced age and cited that his quality of life had greatly deteriorated.

The A$20,000 cost of his travel was supported by Exit International - a pro-euthanasia group that Goodall was a member of for more than 20 years. He voiced frustration and resentment that he needed to travel to Switzerland in order to die rather than to do so in his homeland. Australia currently does not permit assisted suicide.
"My feeling is that an old person like myself should have full citizenship rights including the right of assisted suicide," he said.
