A death mask is a wax or plaster cast of a person's face after their death.
Sculptors and painters used death masks in the Middle Ages until the 19th century as models for creating statues, busts, and portraits of the deceased person.
A funeral mask differs from a death mask. A funeral mask is an image placed on the face of the deceased before burial rites, and the corpse is normally buried with it.
Some famous death masks include those of Napoleon, Henry VII, James Dean, and Beethoven.
