On 14 August 2018 during a torrential rain storm, a 210-metre section of the Ponte Morandi collapsed in Genoa, Italy. Between 30 and 35 cars and three trucks were reported to have fallen from the bridge. The vehicles fell into the rain-swollen Polcevera River. Other parts of the bridge landed on the railways and warehouses below.

The bridge was reportedly undergoing maintenance at the time of the collapse, including strengthening the road foundations. Thirty-eight people were confirmed dead. As of 02:00 the following day, twelve people were known to be still missing.
