Halloween is a celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31st, the eve of All Hallows' Day. This day marks the beginning of the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, a period of time in the Christian calendar dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. Religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, include attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead.

Secular Halloween activities in the United States include trick-or-treating, when children dress up in costumes and walk from one neighbor's house to the next asking for candy. American families also carve pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, light bonfires, and gather apples. Other activities youngsters especially enjoy include playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror films.
