Starting on June 2016, all buses in India will be required to have cameras, GPS tracking, and a special 'panic button' that, when pressed, will contact emergency services and allow the police to view camera footage inside the bus.

This new law came about because of growing pressure from the public for the government to safeguard women from sexual assault. A horrific, fatal assault on a bus three and a half years ago sparked protests and demands for the government to overhaul sexual assault laws. In addition to the new regulations for buses, last month the government announced that as of 2017, all mobile phones sold in India must include panic buttons that alert emergency services with the press of a single button.

The problem of sexual assault in India is very grave. In 2012, the National Crime Records Bureau recorded 24,923 reported rapes in the country. The number grew to 33,707 the next year. In 80% of the cases, the victims knew their attackers.
