Pyromania is a disorder in which a person cannot resist the impulse to deliberately start fires. They do this in order to relieve tension or for instant gratification. Pyromania is different from arson because pyromaniacs start fires for pleasure, and often fixate on institutions of fire control like fire houses and firemen.

Before the act of lighting a fire, a person with pyromania usually experiences tension and an emotional buildup. When around fires, the person may be fascinated by it and may also experience pleasure, gratification or relief. Treatment usually involves therapy and medication.
