Japan's prime minister offered an official apology and $8.3 million dollars to South Korea as compensation for a decades-long impasse between the two nations: the forcing of Korean women into Japanese military-run brothels during World War II.

It is unknown if the 46 surviving victims (once known as 'comfort women') will receive an additional verbal or written apology by Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. These women were among tens of thousands of women from around Asia who were sent to front-line brothels to provide sex to Japanese soldiers.

Many see this apology and monetary compensation as a step toward mending this impasse between the two countries. It symbolizes a willingness for Tokyo's conservative government to admit guilt for what happened decades ago.

Along with the official apology, $8.3 million dollars will be offered to South Korea as compensation. This money will go towards a foundation to help provide support for the victims, who are now in their 80s and 90s. The money will be issued directly from the Japanese government. This adds additional onus to the situation on Japan's behalf.
