Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden unexplained death of a child less than one year of age. SIDS usually occurs during sleep, typically between the hours of 00:00 and 09:00. There is usually no evidence of struggle and no noise produced.

The exact cause of SIDS is unknown. Environmental stressors may include sleeping on the stomach or side, overheating, and exposure to tobacco smoke. SIDS makes up about 80% of sudden and unexpected infant deaths. The most effective method of preventing SIDS is putting a child less than one year old on their back to sleep. Other measures include a firm mattress, no loose bedding, and a relatively cool sleeping environment. Breastfeeding and immunization may also be preventive. It is more common in boys than girls.
