Past Perfect Simple

  1. Form: had + verb in past participle
  2. We use the Past Perfect Simple:

To emphasize that an action in the past finished before another action started

  • I had cleaned my bedroom before my mom arrived

In reported speech

  • The teacher asked me if I had studied for today's exam

In third conditional sentences

  • If she had accepted the job offer, she would have made a lot of money

To show dissatisfaction with the past

  • If only I had listened to my mother... now I regret my decision
