Kite fighting is done in many countries and rules vary. In general, two or more contestants fly their kites and the person who cuts the opponents line wins the fight. Most fighter kites are flown with an abrasive line and some with knives attached to the tail, line, or kite. Kite running has become very popular as a result of these fights. In kite running, groups of people run after and catch kites that have been cut loose in battles with other kites.

There are other factors in who will win the event which include the size and quality of the kite, the quality and abrasiveness of the line, the quality and size of the spool, the spool handler, the skill of the person flying the kite, and the wind conditions.

The abrasive materials used in kite fighting have evolved to become sharper. Rather than using the traditional cotton string, kite fighters are using synthetic materials with metallic or even chemical abrasive compounds. Because of reported accidents involving the injury and deaths of animals and humans, many countries have set limits to the abrasiveness of the lines.
