The Forbidden City is a palace complex in Beijing, China. It was the home of emperors as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government for almost 500 years.

The complex was constructed from 1406 to 1420 and has 980 buildings. It is an example of traditional Chinese architecture. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

Since 2012, the Forbidden City has had an average of 15 million visitors annually.
