An American team led by Dr. Jeffrey Matthews successfully performed the first face transplant in the United States. It was the fourth facial transplant to have been successfully performed to date.

The transplant included bones, muscles, skin, blood vessels, and nerves. The recipient, Connie Culp, received a nose, the upper jaw, and even some teeth from a brain-dead donor. Doctors hoped the operation would allow Connie to regain her sense of smell and ability to smile.
