On January 2, 2016, armed militiamen occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, Oregon (USA) and aimed to strip the federal government's proprietorship over the refuge. Ammon Bundy, a strict Mormon, believed he was sent by God to lead the militia group. Records showed that Ammon Bundy began planning the takeover of the refuge in October 2015.

The occupation of the refuge became worrisome to law enforcement once members of the militia group threatened to use armed conflict against police. On January 26th, Ammon Bundy, his brother, and three other militiamen were stopped 50 miles north of the occupation on highway 395 by police officers. There was a shootout and one militiaman was killed.

This case has forced the US to redefine the word 'terrorist'. Oregon law enforcement referred to the group as "criminals engaged in trespassing" whereas many saw the militiamen as homegrown terrorists.
