Prior to the 19th century, weddings were based out of commodity (not love) and brides were chosen based on their economic worth. Before the 19th century, the bride usually wore the best dress she owned. White wedding gowns did not become popular until the 1840s, when Queen Victoria chose to wear white instead of the traditional royal silver dress.

Sharing the first piece of wedding cake is a ritual that originated as a way to ensure fertility for the bride. Guests also threw rice, nuts, and grains at newlywed couples to wish the couple good fertility and a healthy harvest. Newly married women traditionally also throw their bouquet to the unmarried women at the wedding and the ones who catch the bouquet are said to be the next to be married.

The honeymoon trip after the wedding is where the couple consummates their marriage. Traditionally, newlywed couples would drink honey wine for thirty days after their wedding until the next full moon, hence the name "honeymoon".
