Neither

  1. 'Neither' allows to make a negative statement about two people or things - it is equivalent to "not one or the other"
  • Neither car is red (Not one of the two cars is red)
  • Neither parent came to meet the teacher (Not the mother of the father came to meet the teacher)
  1. When followed by a plural pronoun (us, you, them) or a plural noun, 'neither' must be followed by 'of
  • Neither of us went to the concert (correct) / Neither us went to the concert (incorrect)
  • Neither of my brothers live in England (correct) / Neither my brothers live in England (incorrect)
  1. 'Neither' can be used with 'nor' to say that two things are not true
  • It is neither raining nor snowing
  • Neither my mother nor my father went to university
